As of Monday, the NHL has had a total of 0 positive COVID tests through the first week. This is great! The NHL has given out 7,013 tests since the teams arrived in Edmonton and Toronto on the 26th. Each team is tested daily which includes 52 members of players, staff, and other personnel. Considering the number of teams in the bubble (24), this is a great sign.
The commissioner of the NHL, Gary Bettman had previously thought that this amount of testing would cost millions of dollars. But if the season was canceled totally, they would have lost about 1.2 billion dollars. With continuing the season, the NHL is able to make up about half of that.
As a fan, I'm glad this is working out. The two bubble cities are making it work and we are seeing the results. With football season around the corner, I'm curious to see if they will do a bubble as well. So far, the NBA and NHL are the sports leagues living in bubbles and they are working. Since the MLB hasn't, they've had many many positive COVID tests amongst various teams. My gut says that the NFL won't, but all we can do is wait.
