It's official, there will be no college football this fall for the Big Ten Conference. Big Ten Commissioner, Kevin Warren, stated his reasoning on the decision by stating: "The mental and physical health and welfare of our student-athletes has been at the center of every decision we have made regarding the ability to proceed forward". For star players and collegiate athletes, this obviously sucks. I believe it's the safest thing to do, however. If it isn't safe enough to go back to school and mingle with the student body, then unfortunately it is not safe enough to play football. Today, the Big Ten has joined the Mountain West Conference in canceling football for the fall. There is hope and the initiative to try and have it in the Spring, but we will see. Another major football conference, the Pac-12, who is also expected to make a decision soon, will follow the Big Ten's lead.
There are many questions that arise from this decision. For example, will students be granted another year of eligibility? What happens with current scholarships? Will scholarship offers be expanded into the next year? So far there are no answers and options will be explored. Meanwhile, athletes and coaches are on edge and are left wondering. The NCAA has given no guidance as to what is going to happen either.
It's certainly a crazy time that we live in. I expect most of the star athletes to use this time to prepare for the NFL draft, but as far other athletes...I just don't know. Also, with the cancelation of college football, will high schools be able to justify having fall sports? Again, time will tell.
